Glasgow, 02 August (H.S.): Indian boxers continued their outstanding run at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday, with Ankush Panghal and Sachin Siwach winning gold medals in their respective categories, while Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain secured a silver medal in the women's 75kg event. The impressive performances helped India climb to fourth place in the overall medals table.

Ankush Panghal Clinches Gold in Men's 80kg

Ankush Panghal was crowned champion in the men's 80kg category after defeating England's Shittu Dimeji by a 4-1 split decision in the final.

Despite trailing on some judges' scorecards after the opening round, Ankush staged a remarkable comeback in the second and third rounds. His aggressive punching, accurate counter-attacks, and excellent ring control turned the contest in his favour.

Three judges scored the bout 29-26 in favour of the Indian boxer, while the remaining two judges awarded 28-27 scores, with one favouring Ankush and the other backing his English opponent.

Sachin Siwach Edges Past Namibian Rival for Gold

In the men's 60kg final, Sachin Siwach defeated Namibia's Triagen Morné Ndevelo by a narrow 3-2 split decision to claim the gold medal.

The contest remained evenly balanced throughout all three rounds. Sachin maintained his composure and impressed the judges with timely and accurate punches during crucial moments. Three judges awarded the bout to the Indian boxer, while two favoured the Namibian.

Lovlina Borgohain Takes Silver

In the women's 75kg final, Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain suffered a 4-1 split-decision defeat against Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree and had to settle for the silver medal.

Lovlina fought with determination throughout the bout and landed several effective punches. However, the judges considered the Australian boxer's aggression and ring control to be superior. Despite the defeat, Lovlina made a valuable contribution to India's medal campaign with her silver-medal finish.

India Dominates the Boxing Competition

Indian boxers won a total of nine medals on Saturday, including seven gold and two silver medals. The gold medallists were Ankush Panghal, Sachin Siwach, Arundhati Choudhary, Priya, Sakshi, Preeti, and Jasmine, while Lovlina Borgohain and Jadumani Singh claimed silver medals.

Apart from boxing, India also secured the top two positions in the men's F57 shot put event and added a bronze medal in judo. These performances lifted India to fourth place in the Commonwealth Games 2026 medals table.

India's overall tally has now risen to 35 medals, comprising 11 gold, 16 silver, and 8 bronze medals. With several Indian boxers still set to compete in upcoming finals, the country's medal count is expected to increase further.
