New Delhi, 13 August (H.S.): Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, criticising his recent remarks and manner of conducting himself in Parliament. Singh said Gandhi was behaving like an unruly child and stressed that parliamentary proceedings require members, particularly the Leader of Opposition, to observe a certain standard of decorum.
Taking aim at Gandhi’s “I challenge you” style of remarks, Singh said parliamentary debates should be conducted through facts and reason rather than provocative language. He said Parliament has its own dignity and established norms, and members are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.
Singh also objected to comparisons between Rahul Gandhi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said Shah had demonstrated results through decisions on issues such as the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A and the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The Union Minister also levelled serious allegations against Gandhi over his approach to terrorism-related issues. Describing Gandhi as playing the role of an “urban Naxal”, Singh challenged him to debate issues through parliamentary channels and listen to opposing viewpoints as well.
Singh also targeted Gandhi over the NEET examination and pellet-gun issues. He said that if the issue of pellet guns was raised in Parliament, the NEET examination issue would also have to be discussed, followed by matters concerning states such as Punjab, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand.
The Union Minister also criticised the Congress and said the party should be ashamed of its conduct. Referring to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s support for Gandhi, Singh used the derogatory term “sycophancy” to describe what he called Kharge’s backing of the Leader of Opposition.
