Kolkata, 01 July (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Neuro Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) at Bharat Sevashram Sangha Hospital in Joka. During his visit, the Chief Minister also toured the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), operation theatre complex and various medical and surgical departments to review the advanced healthcare facilities available at the institution.

Bharat Sevashram Sangha stated that it has been serving humanity for the past 100 years through relief and rehabilitation activities during natural disasters, besides making significant contributions in the fields of healthcare, education, tribal welfare and spiritual service. The Joka-based hospital has been providing medical care to people from South 24 Parganas and South Kolkata for the past 16 years, with a special focus on economically weaker and underprivileged patients.

According to the hospital administration, the newly established Neuro ICU has been developed to provide specialised critical care for patients suffering from severe brain and spinal disorders. In its initial phase, the unit has a capacity of 13 beds and is equipped with advanced monitoring systems, ventilators, BiPAP and CPAP support, portable ultrasonography, portable X-ray facilities and other modern critical care equipment.

The Neuro ICU will be managed by a multidisciplinary team comprising neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care specialists, specially trained nurses and respiratory therapists. The unit will cater to patients with stroke, brain haemorrhage, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, post-operative neurosurgical cases and other neurological emergencies requiring intensive care.

The hospital already offers round-the-clock emergency services, a 24-bed Intensive Care Unit, a 10-bed High Dependency Unit, a seven-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, modern operation theatres, Neurology and Stroke services, Nephrology and Dialysis facilities, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose and Throat, and Dental departments.

In addition, the hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities, including MRI, 32-slice CT Scan, Digital X-ray, Ultrasonography, Colour Doppler, Echocardiography, an accredited laboratory, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, neurodiagnostic services, Physiotherapy and a dedicated Neuro Rehabilitation Centre.

The hospital administration expressed confidence that the commissioning of the Neuro ICU will significantly improve access to timely critical care for patients with neurological disorders, helping reduce mortality and complications while enhancing treatment outcomes.
