Kolkata, 07 June (H.S.) : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday left for Delhi amid growing political speculation over internal unrest within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). She is expected to attend a meeting of the INDIA bloc scheduled to be held in the national capital on Monday.
Her nephew and senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee had already reached Delhi on Saturday. The timing of both visits is being closely watched in political circles and is being seen by some observers as an attempt to address growing dissatisfaction within the party’s parliamentary ranks.
The developments come amid reports of continued discontent among legislators and alleged factional tensions within the party. Now, speculation has intensified over a possible split within the TMC’s parliamentary wing as well.
Political corridors are abuzz with claims that several Members of Parliament could break away from the party during the upcoming INDIA bloc meetings in Delhi. According to sources, as many as 22 MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are reportedly exploring the possibility of forming a separate group, which may position itself as the “real Trinamool Congress.” If a significant number aligns with such a faction, it could potentially strengthen their claim under parliamentary rules.
Among those being speculated to lead the possible dissent is Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, although there has been no official confirmation of any such move so far.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is closely monitoring the situation. Senior BJP leaders, including West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and state BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya, are currently in Delhi.
Bhattacharya has claimed that several TMC MPs are in constant touch with BJP leaders. He alleged that repeated phone calls are being received from party MPs, suggesting deepening internal crisis within the TMC.
He further stated that the TMC is “approaching its final phase” and may witness a significant decline in influence in the coming period.
BJP national general secretary Locket Chatterjee has also claimed that, since the election results, multiple MPs have been reaching out through SMS, WhatsApp messages, and phone calls, indicating they are exploring political alternatives.
If these political speculations prove true, it could mark one of the most significant realignments in West Bengal politics in recent years. For now, all eyes remain on the Delhi meetings and the next moves of TMC leaders and MPs.
