
New Delhi, 07 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran Malayalam actor Salim Kumar, remembering him as a versatile performer whose memorable portrayals across a wide range of roles left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
In a condolence message posted on X, the Prime Minister said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Salim Kumar Ji. Over the course of a distinguished career, he made a mark with his versatility and memorable performances across a wide range of roles. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
The Prime Minister’s tribute came amid an outpouring of condolences from across the political, cultural, and film fraternity following the actor’s death at the age of 56. Salim Kumar passed away at a private hospital in Kochi after battling a series of health complications, bringing to an end one of the most remarkable careers in Malayalam cinema.
A National Film Award-winning actor, Salim Kumar rose from Kerala’s vibrant mimicry circuit to become one of the most celebrated performers in the Malayalam film industry. Beginning his artistic journey on stage and television, he gained widespread popularity through his impeccable comic timing and unforgettable screen presence before successfully transitioning into powerful character and dramatic roles.
Over a career spanning nearly three decades, he delivered several iconic performances in films such as Ee Parakkum Thalika, Meesa Madhavan, CID Moosa, Pulival Kalyanam, Chathikkatha Chanthu and Mayavi, earning a special place in the hearts of audiences with his unique blend of humour and emotional depth.
While he was widely acclaimed for his comedic brilliance, Salim Kumar also demonstrated exceptional range as a dramatic actor. His performances in Perumazhakkalam and Achanurangatha Veedu showcased his versatility, while his portrayal in Adaminte Makan Abu earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, one of Indian cinema’s highest honours.
