Bhubaneswar, 25 June (H.S.): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday described the Emergency imposed in 1975 as a dark chapter in India's democratic history and paid tribute to those who fought against what he termed authoritarian rule during that period.

In a social media post marking Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Samvidhan Hatya Diwas), the Chief Minister said the Emergency was imposed across the country on June 25, 1975, due to the “lust for power and authoritarian mindset of a single family.” He alleged that the period witnessed the erosion of constitutional governance, suppression of fundamental rights, imprisonment of lakhs of patriots without justification, and curbs on the freedom of the press.

Majhi said the observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas serves as a reminder of the assault on democratic values and aims to make citizens more aware and vigilant about their constitutional rights.

On the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the Emergency, the Chief Minister paid homage to the countless “Loktantra Senanis” (democracy fighters) who raised their voices against authoritarianism and endured imprisonment and hardships in defence of democratic principles.

He further stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the dignity and sovereignty of the Constitution have been safeguarded, while efforts have been made to empower citizens, particularly those at the grassroots level.

Calling upon people to remain committed to protecting the Constitution and upholding democratic values, Majhi urged citizens to reaffirm their resolve to preserve constitutional supremacy and strengthen India's democratic framework.
