New Delhi, May 25 (H.S.): Lawyers of the Delhi High Court Bar Association will boycott judicial work today in protest against the proposal to enhance the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts. The call for the boycott has been issued by the Delhi High Court Bar Association.
In a notice issued under the signature of Association Secretary Vikram Singh Panwar, opposition was expressed to any proposal seeking to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts. The notice stated that if the financial jurisdiction of district courts is expanded, it would adversely affect the livelihood of lawyers practising in the High Court. It further said that such a move would have a deep impact on the justice delivery system.
Earlier, lawyers of all district courts in Delhi had boycotted judicial work on May 14 over the same issue. The call for that boycott had been given by the Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi.
The Coordination Committee has now criticised the Delhi High Court Bar Association’s call for today’s judicial boycott. It has also issued a separate notice opposing the High Court Bar Association’s decision.
The Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi has demanded that the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi’s district courts be increased from ₹2 crore to ₹20 crore. Discussions regarding this demand had also taken place between the Coordination Committee and the High Court administration. Following these discussions, the committee had withdrawn its boycott of judicial work after May 14.
However, both lawyers’ bodies are now at loggerheads over the issue.
