UP Govt pushes censure motion in assembly

Lucknow,

April 30 (HS): Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked the Samajwadi Party and

the Congress as the Uttar Pradesh government presented a censure resolution

against opposition parties during the assembly's one-day special session on

Thursday for opposing women's reservation in parliament. He stated that if the

opposition genuinely supports women's rights, it should denounce the actions of

the INDI Alliance, which was responsible for blocking the Constitution

Amendment Bill to establish 33% reservation for women in legislatures in

Parliament on April 17. If the Samajwadi Party supports women's reservation, it

should denounce the event that occurred in Parliament. We'll denounce it. You

should denounce it even more harshly, he stated.

Taking aim

at Congress, he stated that they should denounce what happened in Parliament,

particularly the acts of those who rejected the Bill and applauded one another

on doing so.

On

Thursday, Adityanath chastised opposition parties, notably the Congress,

Samajwadi Party, and other constituent members of the INDIA bloc (including TMC

and DMK), for failing to approve the Bill.

The

Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to establish 33% reservation for

women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies beginning in 2029 and

increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha

on April 17. During the split of votes on the Constitution (131st) Amendment

Bill, 2026 in the Lower House, 298 votes were cast in favor and 230

against.

To adopt a

Constitutional Amendment Bill, the Lok Sabha needs a two-thirds majority. To

approve it, 352 of the 528 members have to vote in favor. While the BJP has

accused the opposition for obstructing women's reservation in the Lok Sabha and

state legislatures, the opposition has stated that it is solely opposed to the

delimitation bill. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly held a one-day extraordinary

session on Thursday to examine the Bill. Adityanath referred to the Samajwadi

Party and the Congress as anti-women, noting that a slogan had previously

gained traction in Uttar Pradesh: Women shudder with terror when they see an SP

member.

Issuing a

strong warning to SP, he warned, If you do not change your ways, you will

meet the same fate. You want to push this country back toward regressive

fanaticism. Adityanath also brought up the 1995 guest house incident involving

Bahujan Samaj Party president and former chief minister Mayawati, as well as

the 2005 death of Raju Pal, the husband of Pooja Pal, a current BJP MLA. You

used to grovel before the'mafia'. Pooja Pal is the most obvious illustration of

this; you neglected to wipe away her tears. Looking straight at the SP members,

he added, Even a chameleon would be embarrassed by your true

colours. On one side, you want 33% reservation for women while opposing

it in the assembly.

Yogi

launched a harsh assault on the Congress, saying, You must remember this:

you are all cursed by the collective wrath of women. Forty years have

passed, and the Congress Party has become a desolate wasteland in Uttar

Pradesh. During the Shah Bano case, the Congress groveled before the clerics;

if they had not done so, they would not have met such a shameful end. Adityanath

went on to highlight the many projects introduced around the country over the

previous 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, with a focus

on women's development and empowerment.

He stated

that it is paradoxical that the SP, Congress, and INDIA alliance have

continuously blocked progressive policies designed at ensure participation by

half of the people. Women all around the nation are horrified by the activities

conducted by the Congress, SP, TMC, and opposition parties on April 17. Adityanath

urged the House to uncover those who impede women's self-reliance and empowerment.
