Chennai, 25 April (H.S.): AIADMK Chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday called on party counting agents to remain highly vigilant during the counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled on May 4, warning of possible irregularities at counting centres.

Polling for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was held on April 23, with a high voter turnout recorded across the State. As preparations intensify for counting day, the AIADMK leader issued detailed instructions to party representatives deployed at counting stations.

In a statement, Palaniswami directed counting agents to reach their respective centres at least an hour in advance, carrying valid identity cards. He emphasised that agents must verify whether all arrangements at the counting halls are in order and in compliance with election guidelines.

Highlighting the importance of the initial stages of counting, he said agents should exercise extra caution during the counting of postal ballots. He also instructed them to ensure that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are properly sealed before the counting process begins, underscoring the need for procedural transparency.

Alleging the possibility of malpractice, Palaniswami claimed that representatives of the DMK might attempt to disrupt the process, including through acts of intimidation or violence at counting centres. He urged AIADMK cadres to remain alert and immediately report any such incidents to higher authorities to ensure swift action.

The former Chief Minister further asked party workers to closely monitor the conduct of election officials and remain vigilant against any perceived bias. If any irregularities or partisan behaviour are noticed, they should be reported without delay, he said.

Palaniswami also stressed that counting agents must stay present at the centres until the final round of counting is completed and official results are declared, ensuring full oversight of the process.

Expressing confidence in his party’s electoral prospects, he said the AIADMK would return to power in Tamil Nadu. He also thanked party leaders, cadres, and alliance partners for their efforts during the campaign period, which saw intense multi-cornered contests across the State.

The counting of votes on May 4 is expected to determine the political direction of Tamil Nadu for the next five years, with both ruling and opposition alliances expressing optimism over their chances.
