Ghaziabad, April 22 (HS): Family of 55-year-old man

suspected of raping and murdering his four-year-old niece has refused to claim

his corpse after being murdered in a police encounter in Ghaziabad, with

villagers also calling for police action jusstified. Jasim was wanted for the

rape and murder of a girl, whose corpse was discovered stashed in a vehicle in

the Shalimar Garden neighborhood. Jasim was murdered late Sunday night during a

confrontation in the Teela Mod police station area after reportedly opening

fire while attempting to flee capture.

According to police, Jasim, who was carrying a Rs 50,000 reward, was caught on

CCTV video at a Delhi train station while attempting to leave. Police set up a

trap and approached Jasim after receiving information that he was going to meet

someone near the Banthla canal in Loni.

When he attempted to flee by

opening fire, police replied, injuring him fatally, according to Atul Kumar

Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police in Shalimar Garden. Two police

officers, chief constables Amit and Iqbal, were hurt during the encounter and

are being treated in a hospital, Singh added. The police officers who were hurt

are now safe. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, and legal actions are

already ongoing, according to ACP Singh. According to police, the accused was

found with weapons and cartridges used in the crime. Jasim's relatives have

rejected to accept possession of his remains. His cousin Mehboob and

stepbrother Naseem stated that the family believed he died the day he committed

the act. They also stated that they had come from Muzaffarnagar, but did not

claim the body.

Locals in Pasonda hamlet, a

Muslim-dominated part of Trans-Hindon, hailed the police intervention. Firshad

Chowdhry, husband of the area's municipal councillor, and supporters met with

the ACP and expressed gratitude for the action, stating that such criminals are

a disgrace to society. Police stated an investigation into the matter is

ongoing.
