Kolkata, 22 April (H.S.) : A petition challenging the Election Commission’s restrictive directives on motorcycle movement ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections has been moved before the Calcutta High Court. Justice Krishna Rao has granted permission for the matter to be filed, and the case is likely to be heard on Thursday.
Counsel for the petitioner told the court that the restrictions imposed on the use of motorcycles would cause inconvenience to ordinary people.
The Election Commission, in view of the Assembly elections, has imposed several curbs on motorcycle movement beginning two days before polling. According to a notification issued on Tuesday, no kind of motorcycle rally will be permitted from two days prior to the polling date.
In addition, motorcycle movement will remain prohibited between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. During polling day as well, several regulations will govern the use of motorcycles. However, certain specified categories have been exempted from these restrictions.
The Election Commission’s directive has now been challenged before the High Court.
