Kochi, 01 April (H.S.):

Film director Ranjith, who was arrested in connection with a sexual assault case, has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. He has been lodged at the Ernakulam Sub Jail following his production before a magistrate in Kochi.

According to police sources, Ranjith was presented before the magistrate at the judge’s residence late at night, after being brought to Kochi from Thodupuzha, where he had been taken into custody. His counsel informed the court that a bail application has already been filed and is expected to be considered in due course.

Upon arrival in Kochi, Ranjith complained of health issues and was admitted to the Ernakulam General Hospital for medical evaluation. Doctors examined him on Wednesday morning and confirmed that there were no serious health concerns. Following this, he was shifted to the Women Police Station for further procedures before being produced before the magistrate.

The case against the filmmaker stems from a complaint filed by a young actress, who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Ranjith during a film shoot in Fort Kochi. According to the complaint, the incident occurred inside a caravan on the film set, where the accused allegedly subjected her to sexual abuse.

Police officials have recorded the victim’s confidential statement, which forms a key part of the investigation. The case has drawn significant attention within the film industry and beyond, with calls for a thorough and impartial probe.

Further investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to gather additional evidence, including testimonies and technical inputs, in the coming days.
