Guwahati, 06 March (HS): APCC President Gaurav Gogoi on Friday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of resorting to “opportunistic politics” by allegedly seeking support from the All India United Democratic Front during the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections in Assam.

Addressing reporters, the Congress president said the BJP’s reported attempt to secure AIUDF support for the third Rajya Sabha seat exposes contradictions in the Chief Minister’s political stance. He alleged that Sarma had repeatedly raised issues such as “Miya” identity and illegal immigration in the past, bringing the AIUDF into Assam’s political discourse to divide society.

Gogoi said it was surprising that the same party portrayed by the BJP as its political opponent was now being approached for support during the Rajya Sabha polls. He also claimed that the current political environment in Assam had deteriorated, adding that many people feel uncomfortable about the state’s political situation when they travel outside Assam.

Reiterating his earlier remark, Gogoi described AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal as the Chief Minister’s “108”, implying that Ajmal is always ready to assist Sarma whenever required. He added that if the BJP truly considers Ajmal an opponent, the Chief Minister should clearly say so during party campaigns like the Jan Ashirwad Yatra.

Meanwhile, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, also criticised the BJP and said four opposition parties have now come together with the aim of defeating the ruling party through unity. He expressed hope that more political parties would join the alliance in the coming days.----------
