Guwahati, 28 March (HS): A spell of heavy rainfall on Saturday morning brought life in Guwahati to a standstill, submerging vast stretches of the city and severely disrupting normal activities. The downpour led to widespread waterlogging across several localities, leaving residents stranded and commuters struggling.

Soon after the morning rain, artificial flooding was reported from multiple areas, with water levels rising up to knee-deep in several parts of the city. Localities such as Sarusajai, Chandmari and Jorabat etc. witnessed particularly severe inundation, highlighting the recurring issue of poor drainage and urban flooding in the state’s largest city.

The situation once again exposed the stark reality behind Guwahati’s “smart city” claims, as images of flooded streets and stalled vehicles painted a picture contrary to the narrative of rapid urban development. Residents voiced concerns over inadequate infrastructure and lack of effective flood management despite repeated assurances by authorities.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for Kamrup Metropolitan district, warning of further rainfall later in the day. Wind speeds are expected to range between 30 to 40 km per hour, potentially aggravating the situation.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, as more rain could worsen the already grim conditions in the city.-----------
