Akhil Gogoi Assures ‘Fear-Free Assam for Miya' Ahead of Elections

Guwahati, 20 January (HS): Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi has made a series of strong political statements ahead of the Assembly elections, assuring minorities, particularly the Miya community, of safety and dignity under his leadership. Gogoi said that if he is given charge of the Home Department for five years, he would deliver a “fear-free Assam” and assert that under his rule, Miya would not face violence or intimidation.

The remarks, seen as a direct outreach to minority voters, come at a time when electoral alliances are being actively negotiated. Gogoi indicated flexibility on seat-sharing arrangements, stating that Raijor Dal is willing to accept an alliance even if it is allotted very few seats in Upper Assam’s majority-dominated areas.

He further said that the party would agree to an alliance if it secures just one or two constituencies in minority-dominated regions. Gogoi’s statement followed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi’s claim that the Congress would field candidates in 100 constituencies.

Addressing political criticism, Akhil Gogoi also remarked that he has no objection even if voters in his home constituency of Sivasagar defeat him in the upcoming elections. His comments came in response to a challenge issued by senior Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury, reflecting the intensifying political exchanges as the elections draw closer.----------
