Chennai, 02 January (H.S.) : The Madras High Court on Friday refused to issue an interim stay on the release of the upcoming Tamil film Parasakthi. The movie, which features actors Sivakarthikeyan, Ravi Mohan, and Atharvaa in lead roles, is scheduled to hit the screens on January 10.
The court was hearing a petition filed by assistant director KV Rajendran, who claimed that the film's story was plagiarized from his original script titled Chemmozhi, which he had registered with the South Indian Film Writers Association back in 2010.
During the hearing before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, the petitioner’s counsel argued that the story centered on the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation and had been used without authorization. He requested that the court stop the release and prevent director Sudha Kongara from being credited as the story writer.
However, senior counsels representing the director and the production house, Dawn Pictures, argued that the story of Parasakthi was registered by the director in 2020 and that there were no significant similarities between the two scripts. They further stated that a ban would cause massive financial losses to the producers.
After considering the arguments, the court observed that no concrete evidence of story theft had been provided at this stage. The judge noted that a film produced at a high cost should not be stalled without a strong prima facie case. While refusing to restrain the release, the court had previously directed the writers' association to look into the matter.
Authorities representing the production house maintained that the film is an original work and all legal requirements have been met. The court has allowed the release to proceed as planned while the legal proceedings continue.
