- MSMEs can play an important role in building bridges of trade, innovation and cultural exchange: Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya

Guwahati, 25 July (HS): Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya on Friday attended the Northeast MSME Conclave-2025 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at NEDFI House, where he reiterated the role of MSMEs in achieving sustainable development.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the conclave, the Governor lauded the efforts of CII for accelerating the economic progress of Assam and the entire Northeast region. Extending his heartfelt congratulations to all the participants who attended the conclave, he said, your dedicated role and important initiatives are truly commendable. He termed the conclave as an effort towards strengthening the ecosystem of entrepreneurship, innovation and inclusive growth and an important step towards sustainable development in the region.

Highlighting the crucial role of MSMEs, the Governor said that in the 21st century, MSMEs are the source of livelihood for millions of people and the backbone of our economy after agriculture. They play a vital role in promoting growth, employment and self-reliance. He highlighted the untapped potential of the Northeast and described it as a “priceless treasure” rich in natural resources, biodiversity and traditional industries. He said that the unique products of the region such as bamboo, tea, silk and handloom can be transformed into global assets through the power of MSMEs. Reflecting on the historic economic changes, he recalled that before the collapse of indigenous industries, especially MSMEs, due to colonial exploitation, India accounted for about 27% of the global economy. He said that after Independence, while the focus was on large industries, MSMEs received little patronage for decades.

The Governor lauded the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi for reviving the MSME sector through landmark initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Udyog Sathi App, Samarth Yojana and Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises. The Governor also lauded the initiatives of the State Government including Assam Startup Policy, Industrial and Investment Policy and MSME Facilitation Act aimed at strengthening this vital sector.

On the occasion, he also emphasised the importance of promoting local industries like bamboo crafts, handloom, organic farming and eco-tourism through modern technology, digital innovation and global marketing strategies.

Governor Acharya also reiterated Assam's strategic role as the Gateway to the East under India's Act East Policy. This opportunity must be leveraged with the leading role of MSMEs in building bridges of trade, innovation and cultural exchange, he said. The Governor also urged industry leaders to invest more in the Northeast, enhance training of youth, skill upgradation and enhance global market access for local products. The Governor urged the participants to make the most of this conference through meaningful dialogue and collaboration. The success of this conference will send a message of hope, prosperity and transformation not only for today but also for generations to come, he said.

The event brought together key stakeholders from across the region and provided a platform to deliberate on the potential of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in shaping the future of the Northeast.

The conference was attended by SK Baruah, former Chairman, Northeast Council of CII, Loken Das, Chief General Manager, NABARD, D Surendran, Executive Director, Punjab National Bank, Gopi More, Managing Director, Torsa Machines Ltd and member of the Confederation, among several other dignitaries.
