Chennai, 1 July (H.S.): The Centre has approved a massive Rs 1,894 crore mega textile park project in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. This project is part of the Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park scheme, aimed at boosting the country's textile industry.
The park will be set up on 1,052 acres of land in E. Kumaralingapuram village, Virudhunagar district, and will feature world-class infrastructure, including plug-and-play facilities.
The PM MITRA Park is expected to generate employment opportunities for approximately 2 lakh people and attract investments worth Rs 19,000 crore. With its strategic location near the Chennai-Madurai-Kanyakumari National Highway, Thoothukudi seaport, and Madurai airport, the park will enhance textile exports and contribute to India's position in the global textile market.
Tamil Nadu's textile industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy, accounting for one-third of the textile business size, 45% of spinning capacity, and 70% of knitted garment capacity. The state provides direct jobs to over 60 lakh people and has a comprehensive textile value chain.
The PM MITRA Park will further consolidate and enhance the state's textile industry, making it more globally competitive.
