Guwahati, 1 July (HS): In one of the most extensive enforcement drives since the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 came into force, the state police apprehended 133 individuals and confiscated more than one tonne of suspected beef.

The crackdown, launched suo motu by the Assam Police, targeted illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorised beef sales, especially in sensitive zones where restrictions under the Act are in place.

A senior police official said the action was prompted by complaints about violations at eateries, particularly in areas where the sale of beef is prohibited. “We carried out inspections in restaurants, hotels, and other premises. Multiple FIRs have been filed across police stations,” police said.

Police teams raided 112 establishments across the state, detaining individuals allegedly involved in illegal trade. Meat samples recovered during the operation have been sent for forensic examination to verify if it is indeed beef.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, prohibits the slaughter and sale of beef in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and within a five-kilometre radius of temples or satras (Vaishnavite monasteries). However, beef consumption is not entirely banned across the state.

The senior officer confirmed that the operation remains in progress. “The numbers may change as further action is taken. We will not back down on this,” he stated.

Officials highlighted that this initiative comes amid growing political and social concerns about cattle smuggling and illegal slaughter, particularly in religiously sensitive or demographically mixed areas.

Police have issued a stern warning to all commercial food establishments to adhere strictly to legal provisions, emphasizing that repeat offenders will face tougher penalties.

This drive is being seen as a clear message from the Assam government regarding its commitment to enforcing laws that intersect with religious sentiments and animal welfare.
