Bhubaneswar, 9 May (H.S.): In a decisive move to bolster the security of critical infrastructure, authorities have intensified security arrangements at the Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur and imposed a complete ban on tourist entry to the site with immediate effect. The restriction will remain in place until further notice, as part of precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding national assets amid rising security concerns.
The Sambalpur district administration, in close coordination with state and central security agencies, has implemented heightened surveillance and advanced security protocols at the Hirakud Dam — Asia’s longest earthen dam and a vital component of Odisha’s irrigation, hydropower, and flood management systems.
To strengthen preparedness and deter potential threats, security personnel at the dam have been equipped with modern arms, including Light Machine Guns (LMGs) and high-caliber rifles. These upgrades mark a significant escalation in the site's defensive readiness, with an emphasis on rapid response to any intrusion or sabotage attempt. Monitoring systems have also been enhanced to ensure round-the-clock vigilance.
Tourist movement, previously a regular feature given the dam’s scenic and historical appeal, has been suspended. Police personnel have been stationed at key entry points to enforce the restriction, and public notices have been issued urging cooperation.
“This decision has been taken in the larger interest of public safety and national security,” stated a senior official, while emphasizing that no specific threat intelligence has been disclosed at this time. However, the measure aligns with a broader national push to secure strategic infrastructure amid evolving regional security challenges.
Local residents have voiced additional concerns, calling for the deployment of air-defense systems and further surveillance enhancements at the site. Authorities have assured that the current measures are temporary and will be reviewed periodically in light of the prevailing security scenario.
Constructed across the Mahanadi River, the Hirakud Dam is integral to Odisha’s socio-economic framework. Recognized as a high-value national asset, its protection remains a top priority for both state and central governments. Security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, with further updates to be issued through official channels.
