Gandhinagar, 30 December (HS): Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday gave in-principle approval for the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) to strengthen research and development in Artificial Intelligence, an official release said.
The proposed facility will be set up under a Public-Private Partnership model through a tripartite collaboration involving the state government, the Central government and the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance. The initiative aims to accelerate the national artificial intelligence ecosystem and enhance AI-led research and innovation.
IAIRO will be established as a Special Purpose Vehicle in GIFT City and is scheduled to become operational from January 1, 2026. It will function as a non-profit institution under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. An estimated budget of around Rs 300 crore has been earmarked for the first five years, with equal contributions of 33.33 per cent each from the state government, the Centre and the private partner.
The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance has joined the project as the anchor private partner and will contribute Rs 25 crore during the 2025–26 financial year, the release said.
The initiative is aligned with the objectives of the India AI Mission of the Ministry of Information Technology and the Artificial Intelligence Action Plan of the Gujarat government’s Science and Technology Department.
The state government has also constituted an AI Task Force to promote the use of artificial intelligence for sustainable development and improvements in sectors such as healthcare, education and agriculture. IAIRO is envisaged as a multidisciplinary hub supporting advanced AI research and innovation.
According to the release, the core activities of IAIRO will include advanced AI research and development, creation of AI-based products and solutions, collaboration among academia, industry, startups and government, as well as intellectual property creation, capacity building and policy-oriented research. The organisation will operate under a hybrid computing model, combining on-premise GPU infrastructure with national cloud platforms.
