New Delhi, 25 December (H.S.): The Indian Railways has decided to partially revise the basic passenger fares for various train categories. According to a commercial circular issued by the Railway Board on Thursday, the revised fare structure will come into effect from December 26, 2025.
As per the Ministry of Railways, there will be no change in fares for suburban train single journey tickets and season tickets (both suburban and non-suburban). However, in the non-suburban ordinary second class, the fare has been marginally increased by one paisa per passenger per kilometer, with the maximum limit capped based on travel distance.
Under the revised structure:
No increase will apply for journeys up to 215 kilometers.
For 216–750 km, the maximum hike will be ₹5.
For 751–1250 km, it will be ₹10.
For 1251–1750 km, the increase will be ₹15.
For 1751–2250 km, the maximum rise will be ₹20.
In sleeper and first-class (ordinary) categories, fares have been raised by one paisa per passenger per kilometer. For mail and express trains, the second class, sleeper, and first-class fares will rise by two paisa per kilometer.
Similarly, all air-conditioned classes — AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and AC First Class — will also see an increase of two paisa per passenger per kilometer.
The Railways further clarified that reservation charges, superfast surcharges, and other applicable fees will remain unchanged, and GST will continue to be levied as before. The revised fares will not apply to tickets already issued; tickets booked after December 26 will be charged at the updated rates.
The Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to widely disseminate the updated fare chart and ensure that the new rates are prominently displayed at station counters. The circular has been issued with the concurrence of the Finance Directorate.
