New Delhi, 21 December (H.S.): The Indian Railways has announced a modest increase in passenger fares, effective from December 26, in an effort to offset rising operational costs. Under the revised fare structure, passengers traveling up to 500 kilometres in non-AC coaches will pay only ₹10 extra.
According to the Ministry of Railways, operational expenditure has surged by over ₹2.5 lakh crore in the past year, prompting the need for rationalisation in both freight and passenger segments. The ministry stated that the new fare adjustment is expected to yield an additional revenue of approximately ₹600 crore during the current financial year.
For journeys exceeding 215 kilometres, fares in the ordinary class will increase by 1 paisa per kilometre. In Mail/Express non-AC classes, the fare will rise by 2 paise per kilometre, while in AC classes, the same 2 paise per kilometre revision will apply.
Suburban services and monthly season tickets, however, will remain unaffected. There will be no increase for ordinary class journeys up to 215 kilometres. The ministry highlighted that over the last decade, Indian Railways has expanded its network and operations substantially. To sustain this growth and enhance safety standards, the Railways has also augmented its workforce.
Consequently, expenditure on manpower has risen to ₹1.15 lakh crore, while pension liabilities have climbed to ₹60,000 crore. The total operational cost for the fiscal year 2024–25 has escalated to ₹2.63 lakh crore. To balance these rising costs, the Railways is focusing on increasing freight loading while implementing limited rationalisation in passenger fares.
Officials emphasised that the concerted efforts to improve safety and operational efficiency have produced tangible results. India now ranks as the second-largest rail freight network in the world. The ministry further noted that during the recent festive season, more than 12,000 trains were operated successfully across the country — a testament to improved operational efficiency.
Reiterating its social commitment, the Railways affirmed that it will continue working to enhance efficiency and control expenditure while ensuring passenger safety and affordability remain top priorities.
