Srinagar, 13 December (H.S.): The Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC), Kashmir, today claimed to have seized 17,450 kilograms of banned polythene at the Budgam Railway Station.

Acting on specific information about the transportation of a large quantity of non-biodegradable polythene, the Regional Director, JKPCC Kashmir, formed a special team headed by District Officer Srinagar, Fiaz Ahmad, and District Officer Budgam, Ashraf Khandey, to check and seize the suspected material, officials said.

Accordingly, they said, the JKPCC team, along with a joint team of the district administration and Jammu and Kashmir Police, arrived at the station to check the train, which arrived at 7 PM, six hours later than its scheduled time of 1 PM.

During the search, the team recovered 698 bags of banned polythene measuring less than 120 microns, officials said.

The material, weighing 17.45 tonnes, was seized on the spot under Section 10 of the J&K Non-Biodegradable Material (Management, Handling and Disposal) Act, 2009, they said.

While the seized consignment has been placed in the custody of the GRPF, officials said further investigation is underway to identify the source and intended destination of the illegal shipment.
