Kolkata, 27 November (H.S.).
A major dialogue on India’s population policy, youth engagement and sustainable development took center stage at the 46th annual conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Population held in Kolkata. During the event, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) formally acknowledged the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSSP), which has been selected for the prestigious 2025 United Nations Population Award. IUSSP President Dr. Shireen Jejeebhoy said evidence-based research remains the backbone of policymaking amid complex demographic transitions, and the organisation will continue its commitment to this mission.
The theme of the conference was “Population, Our Planet and Prosperity.” It was organized by the Indian Association for the Study of Population in collaboration with the National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation and the Anthropological Survey of India. Central University of South Bihar Vice-Chancellor Professor K. N. Singh attended as chief guest, along with West Bengal government secretary Vijay Bharti and National Library Director-General Professor A. P. Singh. The event opened with a lamp-lighting ceremony and presentation of mementoes.
UNFPA India Representative Andrea Wojnar delivered the keynote address, highlighting that India stands at the heart of a demographic transformation as the world’s largest youth population. She said India’s long-term prosperity will depend on how effectively it empowers young people through opportunities, education and skill development. She emphasized that demographic policies grounded in data, science and global partnerships can pave the way for inclusive progress.
Speakers discussed a wide range of issues including population growth, migration patterns, climate change impacts, gender equality, women’s rights, sustainable development and youth empowerment. Demographic challenges in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, India’s growing global role in alternative energy, and the expanding participation of young people in social development also featured prominently.
The event concluded with the presentation of special mementoes to guests. Several research publications, including works on migration studies and planning for sustainable development, were officially released, followed by a vote of thanks from Jitendra Yadav.
