Guwahati, 08 January (HS): State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday started the work to prevent erosion of Brahmaputra and Suwanshiri rivers in Jonai of Dhemaji district and Luit Khablu of Majuli district respectively. Minister Hazarika started the construction of a 15 km long new Brahmaputra river embankment from Kerker of Jonai to Barong under the Water Resources Department with a budget of about ₹41.25 crore in the morning.

The minister said in his address that in the last four years, along with the departmental engineers and employees, he has worked seriously in this area. He also mentioned the work done by the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma to deal with floods and erosion.

After this, the minister inaugurated the construction of about 17 km long embankment along the Suwanshiri river at Luit Khablu in Majuli district. The total cost of this project will be ₹24 crore. The minister said that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, road and other infrastructure has developed rapidly in Majuli, which has brought the problem of flood and erosion under control.

The minister said that the state government has achieved the feat of providing 1.5 lakh government jobs without corruption in the last three years. Apart from this, the Water Resources Department has started the construction of a 245 km long new dam with a budget of ₹342 crore.

Jonai MP Pradan Barua and MLA Bhuvan Pegu, Majuli MLA Bhuvan Gam were also present in the program.
