Delhi, 24 January (H.S.): The Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the incidents of disruption in British cinemas over the screening of film actress and Lok Sabha member Kangana Ranaut's popular film 'Emergency'. The Ministry of External Affairs has urged the British government to take steps to ensure freedom of expression.
On the issue of blocking the screening of the Indian film 'Emergency' in Britain, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India is constantly raising the issue with the British government. Apart from this, issues of violent protests by anti-India elements are also being raised continuously. We believe that there should not be a one-sided view on freedom of expression. Action should be taken against those who create deadlock. We hope that the British side will act responsibly on this. Our High Commission in London is constantly communicating for the safety and benefit of the Indian community and members.
Pro-Khalistan groups have tried to disrupt the screening of the film by protesting and raising slogans in cinemas in some cities of Britain and Canada. Kangana Ranaut has expressed concern over this and regretted that the leaders and women's rights activists of India are silent on this in favor of freedom of expression.
Kangana Ranaut has shared a post related to the statement given by British MP Bob Blackman in the House on social media,In this, the British MP has said that pro-Khalistan anarchist elements have disrupted the screening of the film in cinemas. Some cinemas have withdrawn the film fearing more disruption. We should stand against anyone who tries to silence freedom of expression.
The film 'Emergency' is based on the life of Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi. It focuses on the declaration of Emergency in the country in 1975. The screening of the film has also been opposed at some places in the state of Punjab. Due to the protest, many cinemas have stopped screening the film.
