All Odisha districts to get medical college in 5 yrs: Minister Mukesh Mahaling

Bhubaneswar, 19 September (H.S.): Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Thursday announced plans to establish medical colleges in all district headquarters across the state.

“Currently, we have 11 medical colleges in the state and two more will be functional in Talcher and Kandhamal soon. Honouring the top 21 promises made by the Mohan Majhi-led BJP government, we are committed to establishing medical colleges in all district headquarters of the state in five years. We are working on the blueprint in this regard,” he told reporters on Thursday.

Giving details of the state government’s promise, Mahaling said that after assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a new rule in 2014 to establish medical colleges in every district across India. This initiative has led to the setup of medical colleges in Odisha, with funding shared between the central and state governments in a 60:40 ratio.

“We are also working to solve the problem of deficient teachers in the medical colleges in the state. Very soon all vacant positions in the medical colleges will be filled up,” Mahaling added.
