Floods in Orang National Park destroy wildlife

Guwahati (Assam), 02 July (HS): The rising water level of Dhanashree, Panchnai and Brahmaputra rivers has created a unpleasant situation in Orang National Park. About 70 percent of the park area is flooded.

On the south side of the park, flood waters of Brahmaputra river, Dhanashree river as well as other rivers have entered the park, posing a threat to wild animals. Many animals have taken shelter in high safe places in the meantime.

Forest workers are having a tough time guarding amid the floods. Out of the 50 camps in the park, 20 have been submerged. Water is flowing at 7 to 15 feet in Khairasali Balicamp.

Amid such adverse conditions, other animals including the one-horned rhinoceros of the park have to perform their duties by boat to save them from the poachers. Due to the sudden rise in the water level of the Dhanshri river since Monday, there has been a huge rise in water in many camps on the eastern side of the park also.
