Guwahati, 08 July (HS): MLA Badruddin Ajmal on Wednesday alleged that some Congress leaders are involved in the drug trade and claimed that this is why the party opposes police encounters of alleged drug peddlers. He termed the menace drug jihad and launched a sharp attack on the Congress over its stand on anti-drug operations.
Speaking to media persons while on his way to attend the third day of the Assam Legislative Assembly session, Ajmal said the drug menace affects everyone, irrespective of religion or community. When a fire breaks out, it does not spare temples or mosques. Everything is reduced to ashes. Similarly, drugs destroy society as a whole, he said.
Ajmal further alleged that certain Congress members are engaged in drug trafficking and accused the party of defending drug peddlers by opposing encounters carried out against them.
