
Agartala, 20 July (HS): Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday morning. His body was recovered from his office chamber and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to officials, personnel on duty discovered Dhankhar hanging inside his office during a routine inspection and immediately informed senior officers. The incident triggered a swift response, with top police officials, a forensic team and an executive magistrate rushing to the spot.
After completing the necessary legal formalities, the body was sent to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala for post-mortem examination. Officials said the exact cause of death would be established only after the autopsy report and forensic findings are available.
Police are examining all possible angles and have not announced any final conclusion regarding the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators said evidence collected from the scene, along with the post-mortem report, would determine the course of the probe.
A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Anurag Dhankhar took charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura in May 2025. Before his appointment as DGP, he served in several key positions, including DGP (Intelligence).
Senior government functionaries and police officials visited the hospital following the incident. The sudden death of the state's top police officer has sent shockwaves through the administrative and police establishment, while the investigation remains in progress.----------
