New Delhi, 21 July (H.S.): A petition alleging police excesses during the Parliament march held on July 20 in Delhi has been filed before the Delhi High Court. The plea was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya, seeking an urgent hearing.

The court, however, refused to hear the matter on Tuesday and directed that the petition would be taken up for hearing on July 22.

Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya observed that approaching the court over every issue in such a manner was not appropriate.

It may be noted that the Cockroach Janta Party has been staging a protest at Jantar Mantar since June 20, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of irregularities and paper leaks. During the protest, Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike from June 28. After nearly 20 days of fasting, he was removed from Jantar Mantar and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.

The protesters carried out a march towards Parliament on July 20. During the march, clashes reportedly broke out between protesters and Delhi Police at several locations across the national capital.

The petition alleges that police personnel used excessive force against protesters at multiple places during the demonstration. It further claims that Delhi Police resorted to lathi-charge on students at several locations and used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
