Dehradun, July 12 (HS): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for seven districts of Uttarakhand, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning and intense spells of rain in several hilly regions. The state recorded an average rainfall of 15.5 mm during the past 24 hours.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Dehradun, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Nainital and Champawat districts. The department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations in the hill districts.

Light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are expected at many places in the mountainous districts and at a few places in the plains.

In Dehradun, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with one or two spells of light to moderate rain during the day. Heavy showers may occur in some areas, while the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 34 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department has advised people travelling to hilly areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary movement in landslide-prone locations in view of the heavy rain warning.

According to the IMD, monsoon activity remained normal across the state during the past 24 hours, with an average rainfall of 15.5 mm. The state has received a cumulative rainfall of 323.8 mm during the ongoing monsoon season.

Among manual rain gauge stations, Rameshwar recorded the highest rainfall at 80 mm, followed by Haripur (67.6 mm), Ukhimath (52.5 mm), Kashipur (52 mm), Ramnagar (46 mm), Kirtinagar (45 mm), Mussoorie (44.3 mm), Berinag (40 mm), Pithoragarh (38.7 mm) and Munsiyari (37.4 mm).

Data from Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) showed Mussoorie receiving 75 mm of rainfall, followed by Maldevta (71.5 mm), Kaladhungi and Berinag (66.5 mm each), Kalsi (66 mm), Hathibarkala (54.5 mm) and Dehradun (37 mm). Light to moderate rainfall was also recorded in Rudraprayag, Nainital, Tanakpur, Kausani, Mohkampur, Laksar, Pandukeshwar and Haldwani.
