Dehradun, July 12 (HS): Former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan (Retd) on Sunday said future wars would be shaped by technology, joint military capability and multi-domain operations, stressing the need for the armed forces to continuously adapt to evolving warfare and emerging technologies.
Addressing a felicitation ceremony organised by the All India Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association at Sainik Institute, Garhi Cantt, Gen Chauhan said that while soldiers are known for fighting wars, much of their service is devoted to preparing for them through planning, strategy and coordination.
Reflecting on his 47-year military career, including his tenure as the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Chauhan said victory remains the ultimate objective in any conflict and defeat is never an option.
Referring to the conflict with Pakistan in May 2025, he said India's success was a significant achievement and described
Operation Sindoor as a model of joint military operations, integration and coordinated strategy. He said the operation, planned over three years, effectively integrated the capabilities of the Army, Navy, Air Force, as well as the space and cyber domains.
Gen Chauhan said every conflict presents unique challenges, making it essential for the armed forces to constantly learn, innovate and adopt new technologies in line with changing operational requirements.
Emphasising that change is a constant in military affairs, he said the trust and respect of the people remain the greatest strength of the armed forces. Every soldier, he said, must uphold the highest standards of duty, discipline, integrity and commitment.
He also stressed the need to promote strategic thinking in the country and said states such as Uttarakhand should play a greater role in shaping national strategic discourse. The Himalayan region's spiritual and cultural traditions, he said, have long guided the nation and can continue to offer fresh perspectives.
Speaking about life after retirement, Gen Chauhan said he has made Dehradun his permanent home and looks forward to remaining closely associated with Uttarakhand and its people.
The All India Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association honoured Gen Chauhan during the programme. Minister of State and Chairperson of the Gorkha Welfare Council Jyoti Kotiya, Association President Col R.S. Chhetri (Retd), Uttarakhand Ex-Servicemen League President Maj Gen M.L. Aswal (Retd), Maj Gen Shammi Sabharwal (Retd), Lt Gen A.K. Singh (Retd) and a large number of ex-servicemen attended the event.
