Guwahati, 13 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday inaugurated a major narcotics destruction drive at the 14th Assam Police Battalion campus in Daulashal, Nalbari, where seized drugs worth ₹472.51 crore is being destroyed over the next 10 days.

The programme was attended by Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and Barkhetry MLA Narayan Deka. Similar district-level drug destruction drives will also be conducted across Assam as part of the state's ongoing anti-drug campaign.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said Assam Police seizes narcotics worth more than ₹1,000 crore every year and has intensified its crackdown on drug traffickers. He added that the campaign would be further strengthened in the coming days.

A drug incinerator provided by the Government of India has been installed at Daulashal for the destruction of the seized contraband. The substances to be destroyed include heroin, ganja, cough syrup bottles, tablets and capsules, opium, morphine, methamphetamine, Yaba tablets, cocaine, opium plants and poppy straw.

Dr. Sarma also said that over the last five years, Assam Police has registered around 3,300 cases under the NDPS Act and seized narcotics worth more than ₹3,227 crore. He credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah for improving inter-state coordination to combat drug trafficking and asserted that the BJP government remains firmly committed to eliminating the drug menace from Assam and the country through strict action against traffickers.

Meanwhile, the Assam BJP welcomed the initiative, with senior party spokesperson Brajen Mahanta describing the drug destruction campaign as a strong and decisive step in the fight against narcotics.------------
