DMK begins organisational revamp to rebuild after Assembly poll setback

Chennai, 01 July (H.S.):Setting the stage for a major organisational reset after its defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has launched a comprehensive restructuring exercise aimed at revitalising the party from the grassroots to the State headquarters.

The initiative marks the first major organisational decision taken by the party after losing power, with the leadership acknowledging the need to strengthen the organisation, improve internal coordination and reconnect with the electorate following its electoral setback. The 2026 Assembly polls ended the DMK's five-year tenure in office and paved the way for the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government to assume power.

As part of the exercise, DMK president M.K. Stalin has constituted a 10-member advisory committee comprising senior leaders Thangam Thennarasu, Geetha Jeevan, A.R. Chakrapani, S.S. Sivasankar, Tamilarasi Ravikumar, M.M. Abdulla, I. Paranthamen, S. Murasoli, Ezhilan Naganathan and S.K.P. Karuna.

The committee has been tasked with recommending a uniform organisational structure across all levels of the party and preparing a roadmap for structural reforms designed to make the organisation more efficient, responsive and politically prepared for future challenges.

According to Stalin, the restructuring exercise forms part of a broader programme of organisational renewal intended to address shortcomings identified during an extensive post-election review and reposition the party for the years ahead.

Soon after the Assembly election results, the DMK leadership constituted 19 field study teams comprising 38 senior functionaries to undertake a detailed assessment of the party's performance. The teams toured districts across Tamil Nadu, interacted with cadre, local office-bearers and district leaders, and gathered feedback on the reasons behind the electoral defeat as well as organisational deficiencies that surfaced during the campaign.

The findings of those study teams have now become the foundation for the advisory committee's work. Party leaders said the panel would examine the existing organisational framework, recommend measures to strengthen grassroots units, improve coordination between different levels of the party and enhance public outreach as the DMK seeks to rebuild its organisation after its loss in the Assembly elections.
