New Delhi, 07 June (H.S.):
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Hitesh Kumar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Sector-39 Police Station in Chandigarh, after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹40,000. The accused is alleged to have demanded the bribe in exchange for releasing a vehicle involved in a road accident case and refraining from registering a case against the complainant.
The CBI said on Sunday that a First Information Report (FIR) was registered in the matter on June 6 based on a complaint. According to the complainant, ASI Hitesh Kumar had demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 for releasing his vehicle involved in a road accident and for not initiating criminal proceedings against him.
During the course of verification and subsequent discussions, the accused allegedly agreed to accept ₹40,000. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the ASI on June 6 while he was accepting the bribe amount of ₹40,000 from the complainant.
The arrested ASI will be produced before the competent court in Chandigarh.
The CBI has also initiated searches at premises linked to the accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.
