New Delhi, 10 June (H.S.): The Central Government has approved Phase-2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, which will develop the Koteshwar Road–Airport Corridor. The 6.032-kilometre corridor will feature five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station. The total project cost has been estimated at ₹2,169.04 crore.

Briefing the media on Cabinet decisions on Wednesday, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Koteshwar Road–Airport Corridor. He stated that the six-kilometre route will have five stations and that its most significant feature is its connectivity between the airport and the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, which is being developed with a view to hosting future Commonwealth Games events. The project is targeted for completion within four years.

The stations to be constructed under Phase-2A include Ashram Road, Koteshwar Ancient Temple, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport Station. Upon completion of this phase, the total operational metro network in Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar will expand to 77.63 kilometres.

According to the government, the project will provide improved public transport connectivity to the airport, residential areas, and commercial hubs, while ensuring seamless integration with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network. It is expected to make urban commuting more convenient, promote tourism and business activities, and support the development of sports infrastructure in the surrounding areas ahead of the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.

The government further stated that the project will stimulate economic activity, attract investment, and improve accessibility to less-developed areas. It is also expected to enhance the quality of life by providing equitable access to public transportation for people across different social and economic groups.

Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A is expected to generate employment for approximately 2,000 people during the peak construction period, while around 500 direct jobs are likely to be created during the operation and maintenance phase.
