Ukhrul (Manipur), 10 June (HS): The bodies of six Naga men who had been missing since May were recovered on Wednesday in Manipur's Ukhrul district following an extensive search operation carried out by security forces. The discovery came a day after the reported release of 14 hostages linked to the same incident.
A search team comprising around 450 personnel from the Manipur Police, CRPF and Assam Rifles, supported by sniffer dogs and forensic experts, conducted intensive combing operations for nearly 24 hours before locating the mortal remains. According to sources, the bodies were found in a severely mutilated condition, making identification difficult. Allegations have also surfaced that the victims were subjected to torture before being killed.
The incident traces back to May 13, when a group of villagers was returning from a reception ceremony at Konsakhul Naga village. While passing through Leilon Vaiphei village, they were reportedly stopped at a bamboo barricade erected on the road. Eighteen individuals, including men, women and a child, were allegedly detained during the confrontation.
Subsequent negotiations led to the release of the women and the child, while 14 detainees were reportedly freed through an exchange process in Kangpokpi district on May 15. However, six Naga men remained missing. The deceased have been identified as Kenpibou, Phenrongwi Thiumai, Rev. Dr. Manu Thiumai, Dilip Thiumai, Kaliwangbou Abonmai and Ch. Phenrilung.
The United Naga Council (UNC) stated that the release of the 14 detainees was facilitated following appeals from Naga churches, tribal bodies, civil society organizations and the wider Baptist community. The council also referred to assurances from the Manipur government regarding intensified search efforts and action against those responsible for the abductions.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to identifying and arresting the perpetrators, while continuing efforts to maintain law and order and enforce existing security arrangements in the region.-----------
