West Burdwan, 22 May (H.S.): A complaint alleging financial fraud in the name of providing jobs has been lodged against former Trinamool Congress MLA from Pandaveswar Narendra Nath Chakraborty, while a TMC labour wing leader was arrested in a separate cheating case in Durgapur, the police said on Friday.
Khagendranath Mondal, a resident of Joyalbhanga village under Pandaveswar police station area, alleged that Chakraborty had promised jobs to 15 local youths in exchange for money.
According to the complaint, the former MLA allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from each candidate and around Rs 20 lakh was collected from the families in phases after they arranged the money through loans and borrowings.
The complainant alleged that neither were the promised jobs provided nor was the money returned despite repeated requests.
Chakraborty, however, denied the allegations and claimed that attempts were being made to implicate him politically.
“There is a conspiracy to frame me. I have always helped people within my capacity,” the former MLA said in a statement circulated on social media.
In a separate incident, the police arrested TMC labour organisation block president Sheikh Wasul from the Faridpur-Laudoha area of Durgapur late on Thursday night.
Police sources said he was accused of financial cheating in the name of providing jobs, creating terror in the locality and intimidating voters during the elections.
Wasul was produced before a Durgapur court on Friday.
He denied the allegations and claimed innocence.
The police said investigations in both cases are underway.
