Bhubaneswar, 22 May (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal towards the end of May, raising the possibility of enhanced thunderstorm activity across Odisha in the coming days.
According to the weather office, a cyclonic circulation remains active over Odisha and adjoining regions. Under its influence, atmospheric conditions are becoming favourable for the development of a low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal around May 28–29.
The IMD stated that the system is likely to form over the east-central Bay and subsequently move in a northwesterly direction. While the exact intensity and track of the weather system are yet to be determined, meteorologists believe it could significantly strengthen Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity across several parts of the state.
As a result, Odisha may witness an increase in thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, lightning, and moderate rainfall during the period. Several districts are already experiencing unstable weather conditions due to the prevailing cyclonic circulation.
Meanwhile, the weather department has also warned that intense heatwave conditions are likely to persist across Odisha for at least the next five days, with many areas expected to continue recording above-normal temperatures.
The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather system and is expected to issue further updates as the situation develops.
