Kolkata, 22 May (H.S.): Temporary employees of the North Dum Dum Municipality staged a protest on Friday by locking the main gate of the civic body, alleging prolonged salary delays and lack of wage revision for several years.

The agitating workers blocked the entrance and sat on the road in protest, prompting deployment of police personnel to control the situation.

According to the protesters, they have not received salaries on time for years and payments are often irregular. They alleged that at times only partial salaries were paid, while in some instances they received one month’s salary after a delay of two months.

The employees claimed that despite repeated appeals and deputations demanding salary hikes and regular payment schedules, the municipal authorities failed to address their grievances. They said their wages have not been increased in the last five years.

“We do not even know on which day of the month we will receive our salaries. Running families has become extremely difficult,” one of the protesting workers alleged.

The protest intensified on Friday when workers locked the municipal gate and launched a sit-in demonstration outside the office premises.

No detailed response was immediately available from the municipal chairman regarding the allegations.

The incident comes amid increasing political scrutiny over alleged irregularities and administrative issues in several civic bodies across West Bengal following the recent political change in the state.
