22 May (HS): A 48-year-old bus driver was killed and around 20 passengers were
injured after a double-decker bus collided with an overturned sand-laden truck
on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway early Friday, according to police. The collision
occurred about 2.30 a.m. around Kilometre 46, beneath the Matsena Police
Station area. According to authorities, the sleeper bus was on its way to
Gurugram from Kanpur when it collided with the dumper, which had turned upside
down after striking the barrier. The accident caused a short circuit, which
ignited the bus, prompting passengers to shatter the window glass and jump out.
The deceased driver was identified as Shambhu, a Kanpur native from the Bari
neighborhood.
Superintendent
of Police (City) Ravi Shankar Prasad and City Magistrate Vinod Kumar Pandey
told reporters that there were around 40 to 45 passengers aboard the bus at the
time of the event. According to the SP, twenty people were hurt in the
incident, with seven badly injured being taken to Firozabad hospital and the
rest being transferred to Saifai. It took nearly three hours for firefighters
to put the fire under control. The driver's body was submitted for a postmortem
examination.
