Kolkata, 21 May (H.S.): The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a fresh investigation into the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case after considering the demands raised by the victim’s family.

The court directed the formation of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), which will function under the leadership of a Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The High Court also instructed the CBI to revisit the crime scene, speak with the victim’s family and thoroughly examine all records, documents and evidence related to the case.

The court observed that the direction was being issued considering the nature of the crime and the need for societal satisfaction. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for June 24, when the CBI will have to submit its report before the division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.

Earlier, the High Court had sought the case diary, audio-video evidence, photographs and all relevant documents related to the investigation. During Tuesday’s hearing, the bench questioned how people were being allowed access to the crime scene despite the investigation not being fully complete.

The court also directed authorities to immediately take steps to seal all relevant locations inside RG Kar Hospital, including the seminar room connected to the incident.

The case relates to the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, raising questions over the investigation, the victim’s family approached the High Court seeking further scrutiny and fresh directions in the case.

Notably, three different benches of the Calcutta High Court had earlier recused themselves from hearing the matter before it was finally assigned to the current division bench.
