Bhubaneswar, 21 May (H.S.): Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Thursday underscored the importance of selfless service, discipline and leadership in shaping responsible citizens, stating that service to society is ultimately service to oneself and represents the highest expression of humanity.

Addressing the Rajya Puraskar Award Ceremony of the Bharat Scouts and Guides at New Abhisek Hall in Lok Bhavan, the Governor invoked the ancient Indian principle of “Seva Paramo Dharma” (Service is the Highest Duty), emphasising that helping others adds purpose and meaning to life.

Expressing his happiness at being part of the occasion, Dr. Kambhampati described the ceremony as a proud celebration of the dedication, commitment and achievements of young Scouts and Guides. As the Chief Patron and First Guide of the Odisha State Bharat Scouts and Guides, he said the Rajya Puraskar is much more than an award, symbolising character, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to society and the nation.

“The honour reflects values such as compassion, teamwork, responsibility, discipline and patriotism,” the Governor said, adding that every awardee had earned the recognition through sincerity, hard work and dedicated service to humanity.

Highlighting the role of value-based education, Dr. Kambhampati stressed the need to instil qualities such as kindness, humility, empathy and discipline among children from an early age. According to him, these virtues are essential for nurturing responsible, compassionate and socially conscious citizens.

The Governor also lauded the Bharat Scouts and Guides movement for its significant contribution to youth development. He said the organisation has played a vital role in cultivating leadership qualities, life skills, environmental awareness and disaster management capabilities among young people across the country.

Referring to the organisation’s extensive reach, he noted that Bharat Scouts and Guides has more than 7.5 million members nationwide, including over four lakh Scouts and Guides in Odisha. He commended their active participation in social initiatives such as cleanliness drives, plantation campaigns, health awareness programmes and assistance during public events and emergency situations.

Congratulating the Rajya Puraskar recipients, the Governor praised their dedication and encouraged them to continue serving society with commitment and integrity. He also acknowledged the efforts of teachers, parents, unit leaders and officials whose guidance and encouragement helped shape the young achievers.

School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond also addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of youth engagement in nation-building activities.

Earlier, State Chief Commissioner of Odisha and National Vice-President of Bharat Scouts and Guides, Kali Prasad Mishra, delivered the welcome address and outlined the organisation’s ongoing efforts to promote leadership, community service and character-building among students.

The ceremony brought together Scouts, Guides, educators and officials to celebrate excellence in service and reaffirm the values of discipline, teamwork and social responsibility that form the foundation of the Bharat Scouts and Guides movement.
