Lucknow,
21 May (HS): On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court confiscated the Lucknow
mayor's administrative and financial powers until she administered the oath to
corporator Lalit Kishore Tiwari. The decision was issued by the Lucknow bench
of the court in a case involving ward number 73 in the city's Faizullaganj
neighborhood, where Tiwari has yet to be sworn in as a corporator five months
after the electoral tribunal certified him elected. The court ruled that until
the corporator deemed elected by the tribunal is given the oath, the mayor's
financial and administrative rights would be suspended. The order was issued by
Justices Alok Mathur and S Q H Rizvi. On May 13, the court issued another
severe ruling on Tiwari's inability to take oath.
On
May 13, the mayor and district magistrate sought an exemption from appearing in
person before the court. The court had then ruled that the oath be given within
a week, failing which the mayor, DM, and municipal commissioner must physically
appear before it on the next date of hearing on May 21.
