Hooghly, 01 May (H.S.) : At least four persons were killed and six others injured after a truck rammed into a stationary dumper on the Durgapur Expressway in Singur in the early hours of Friday, the police said.
The victims were returning to their home in Dankuni in a small truck after performing last rites in Gaya when the vehicle hit the dumper from behind near Ratanpur on the Kolkata-bound stretch of the highway.
The deceased have been identified as Paritosh Kirtaniya, Kajal Kirtaniya and their two married daughters, Fuli Mukhopadhyay and Mithu Bag, all residents of Dankuni, police said.
Six others sustained injuries in the accident and have been admitted to hospital, they said.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the truck may have failed to notice the stationary dumper in time, leading to the collision, the police added.
Traffic was disrupted for some time following the incident before being restored by the authorities.
