Kottayam, 01 May (H.S):Veteran public activist and consumer rights crusader Dijo Kappan passed away at the age of 68 on Friday. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Pala, where he had been undergoing treatment for several months following injuries sustained in a car accident.
A native of Edamattom in Bharananganam, Kappan was widely respected for his relentless advocacy for consumer rights and public welfare. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in leading several legal battles aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring accountability in public services. He was also associated with the Centre for Consumer Education as a trustee, contributing significantly to awareness and policy-level discussions on consumer protection.
Kappan began his political journey through the Kerala Congress and emerged as an active student leader during his early years. In 1982, he served as the General Secretary of Kerala University, marking a prominent phase in his public life. He later went on to hold key positions in youth politics, including serving as the State President of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) Youth Front.
However, in 1998, Kappan stepped away from active politics, choosing instead to dedicate his life to social causes. His work thereafter focused on critical issues such as road safety and the rights of consumers, areas in which he remained actively engaged until his final days.
Known for his integrity and commitment to public service, Dijo Kappan leaves behind a legacy of principled activism and grassroots engagement. His contributions to consumer rights and civic awareness have earned him widespread respect across political and social circles.
