Bhubaneswar, 01 May (H.S.): The proposed metro rail project in Odisha is set to return in a new form, with plans to develop it as a tri-city network connecting Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. This was announced by Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra while speaking to the media.

Highlighting the need for a modern urban transport system, the Minister said the metro project is being envisioned as an integrated regional network rather than a city-specific initiative. He added that in the coming years, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, and Paradip are expected to evolve into a major economic corridor, driving comprehensive growth and development.

Raising concerns over past urban planning, Mohapatra questioned the lack of long-term infrastructure vision in the state. “Was there no town planning over the last 24 years? Who is responsible for the current traffic and infrastructure challenges in Bhubaneswar?” he asked.

The Minister clarified that the present government remains committed to the metro project. “We are keen to develop the metro rail system. The project has not been halted, and necessary processes are underway,” he said.

He further noted that initiating metro construction without adequate road infrastructure could lead to significant inconvenience for commuters, particularly during construction and trial phases. Stressing the importance of preparedness, he said the development of alternative road networks is essential before commencing metro work.

Mohapatra also stated that the state government will seek support from the Central Government and adopt appropriate technologies to ensure the effective implementation of the project.
