New Delhi, 30 April (H.S.): Newly elected Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi, upon assuming charge, inspected the Bhalswa landfill site Thursday to improve cleanliness arrangements and reviewed ongoing biomining and bioremediation works. The Mayor also visited the CBG plant at Ghoga.
Pravesh Wahi stated efforts continue to free Delhi from garbage mountains, with regular reviews of biomining progress. Bhalswa landfill's legacy waste will be fully remediated by December 2026 end.
Wahi expressed satisfaction with legacy waste disposal progress at Bhalswa but directed accelerating biomining for timely completion. He instructed deploying additional machinery for faster remediation.
Post-remediation, the Mayor said green belts will develop on landfill sites, with reclaimed land used for public welfare projects after discussions with Delhi government.
Wahi revealed Bhalswa originally had 73 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste. Remediation began November 2022; Phase 1 cleared 45 lakh metric tonnes. Phase 2 started December 2024, remediating 43.44 lakh metric tonnes.
Now only 13.58 lakh metric tonnes remain, targeted for complete clearance by December. The waste mountain's height dropped from 65 meters maximum to about 30 meters.
Wahi inspected Ghoga CBG plant, issuing strict directives for smooth operations. He appealed to Delhi citizens, RWAs, and market associations to segregate wet and dry waste at source for waste-free Delhi success. RWAs achieving 100% segregation will be incentivised.
Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, Additional Commissioner Arun Kumar Mishra, Chief Engineer PC Meena, Narela Zone Deputy Commissioner Raghavendra Meena, and other senior officials accompanied the inspection.
